Who Owns the Maserati Car Company Today?

We receive a lot of questions about Maserati’s long history. Sometimes new customers have asked us “Is Maserati owned by Ferrari?” To tell the truth, it’s a question well worth answering.

The company was founded in 1914 when three of the Maserati brothers started an auto workshop in Bologna, Italy. They created the very first Maserati car, the Tipo 26, in 1926. They owned the company until it was sold in 1937. But who owns the Maserati car company today? In fact, one of the most common questions we’ve been asked has been, “Is Maserati owned by Ferrari? Well, the answer is a little complicated.

After selling their remaining shares to Italian industrialist, Adolfo Orsi, the company would continue its successful car lines while participating in various major racing events. Eventually withdrawing from racing, they introduced several great vehicles in the postwar era, including the Maserati Ghibli, Maserati 3500 GT, and Maserati 5000 GT.

In the late ’60s, Maserati became part of the French automotive maker, Citroën. They would lead the company through several unique models including the Maserati Bora and Maserati Merak.

Unfortunately, the 1973 oil crisis and eventual economic downturn led to Citroën’s departure. The Italian state-holding enterprise, GEPI, took 89% control in Maserati, with the rest going to an Argentinian industrialist/ex-racing driver, Alejandro de Tomaso, who became the CEO and President.

Through the 1980s, despite mixed sales, the company continued to hold its ground. A deal with Chrysler to acquire a 5% stake in 1984 led to the development of an American-marketed vehicle, The Chrysler TC by Maserati. By 1988, Tomaso acquired all control from GEPI and brought in Fiat. In 1993, he would sell his stake to Fiat.

In a turn of events in 1997, Fiat sold a 50% share to long-time arch-rival, Ferrari. So when people ask “Do Maseratis have Ferrari engines?” there is a reason. Ferrari had also been through its own set of interesting owners, being primarily owned by the Italian government from the 1930s through the ’80s. They would launch a string of new vehicles and reenter the coveted American auto market in 2002. Among the most unique were the Maserati 3200 GT, the Maserati GranTurismo, and GranCabrio, and the Maserati MC12, their first return to racing in quite some time. During that time, “Is Maserati owned by Ferrari?” was the question every auto owner and business publication was interested in.

In 2005, Fiat split Maserati off from Fiat and created “The Maserati and Alfa Romeo Group.” Despite all the shifts and corporate changes, the company’s base of operation and manufacturing remains in its home country of Italy. If an auto enthusiast asks “Do Maseratis have Ferrari engines?” You can answer, “At one point they did.”
